Louisville Metro Parks to Shut Down Outdoor Pools
It seems that our fitness Mayor, Jerry Abramson and the Louisville Metro government has decided to close 5 of the outdoor Parks swimming pools for the upcoming summer. We have used two of those pools, Watterson and Breslin, each summer that I can remember. The effect of these closings is multi-faceted. We may have difficulty finding water when Mary T goes down for maintenance. Teams, and other types of aquatic programs, that had been using these pools will probably be looking for more time at Mary T. That could include more teams, kayaking, aqua aerobics, SCUBA, diving, lessons, life guard training…..and so on. And I haven’t even mentioned the many recreational swimmers (kids and parents) that rely on these neighborhood facilities for inexpensive outdoor play, exercise, and fitness. Join me in trying to get the Metro to rethink their decision. Anyone with ideas, please contact me.

Go The Distance
Mark Gill is promoting a USMS fitness event, Go The Distance, and many of the U of L group is already participating. This would be a great “team” and “individual” event. Your distance and your team distance will be tracked and recognized for the entire year! It’s not too late to start.

Go to http://www.usms.org/fitness/content/gothedistance for an explanation of the event or contact Mark to get started. No excuses, you don’t have to go off the block and no one will be watching you.

Sharks Take First Place (medium team) at Barbara Stevens Memorial
Swim Louisville Masters captured first place for medium size teams at the Western Kentucky Green Gators Barbara Stevens Memorial swim meet in Bowling Green on Saturday, January 12. That was with 10 swimmers. The Western group was able to move the meet away from the Bowling Green H.S. glass dome, and on to the Western Kentucky University campus. No excuses not to swim now!

Swim Louisville Adds Up Massive Yardage for One Hour Postal
Talking about participation! SLM had 45 swimmers enter the USMS One Hour Postal National Championships in January. We completed 179,190 yards! Add that to the other 45 swimmers from around Kentucky, and the total for Swim Kentucky was 330,870 yards! These are outstanding results, congratulations. I have attached the Swim Louisville results and the Swim Kentucky results and relays to this e-mail.
